Our house has been under construction for a while. When construction first began, I found that some areas of the house became completely unusable because of things stored or piled there. Other areas were more difficult to use because everything was just thrown in the room to clear out the space where construction would begin. As exciting as construction is, it is also very stressful. We realized that we just needed to start going through things in our house to determine what we could get rid of and what could be stored elsewhere. The truth is that I was avoiding doing anything because most of the house was literally piled with stuff so that it looked like some of the storage lockers in the TV show Storage Wars. That is not how I want to live or how I want my house to look, even if only for a short while. Tackling even one room felt overwhelming, partly because everything in our house is often overwhelming. Thankfully I have an amazing husband who was able to start working on that. He made a space where we could relax together as a family. It still needs work but we have a place to sit together as a family and that is worth a lot!

My husband tackling the bulk of the living room was a good start that will make it easier to arrange everything once the construction is finished. But we can’t stop there. We need to continue doing little things each day so the house is manageable, so that it is a comfortable place for us to rest and recharge. And we need to continue in a way that feels do-able so we are not overwhelmed.

I don’t have a single method for decluttering and organizing that works for me and I don’t believe there is only one method that works for everyone. But I do believe that if we don’t give up, we will find what works for us. So for now,  we are taking it one item at a time, one spot at a time (like cleaning off the table), and one day at a time. Sometimes handling life in small pieces, even if its not how we envision in our mind, is what we need to move forward and make life less stressful or overwhelming.

I watch thr Minimal Mom, Cas from Clutterbug, Dana White from A Slob Comes Clean, and Joshua Becker. Have you watched anyone that has been really helpful for you?
